Oakland teaching fellows - The Oakland Teaching Fellows program is an initiative of the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) to recruit, select, train, and support outstanding mid-career professionals and recent college graduates to teach in critical shortage area subjects in high-need schools. The Oakland Teaching Fellows program places new teachers in special education, math, and science classes.

Since the early twentieth century, American educators have been engaged in a heated debate over what schools should teach teaching math and science and how they should teach it. The partisans -- "education progressives" teaching math and science and "education traditionalists" -- have usually kept their disagreements within the walls of the nation's schools of education.
